Sara Mackie, Actor
Without wonder and insight, acting is just a trade. With it, it becomes creation.

04/13/2025In school I did so much classical theatre, usually playing the most bombastic clowns (Bottom, Feste) and I thought I would continue that into the pro world. Alas, there were old men to cast so, why would they look twice at a character actress in her 20s?
Now, I’ve still been able to chew my share of the scenery (see Kate H’s Pride… and multiple holiday shows, even Taming… allowed for a lot of delicious physical comedy.)
But getting to play Trinculo in The Tempest this past April was joyful – even though everything hurts! I had terrific mates in Stephano and Caliban and the three of us were permitted to just “yes, and” our way through a very truncated rehearsal process. Fast and furious.
Did I mention everything hurt?

03/01/2025Director Christopher V. Edwards sent us on a literal acid trip. His adaptation set this telling in the early 1960s America when our government was experimenting with mind altering drugs on soldiers, women with post- partum depression, mentally ill patients and minorities, all without informed consent. (See MK Ultra) I was a member of the Coven, Witch 1, and we were also the MacBeths’ household staff. We were dresses as 60s housewives, innocuous, benign on the outside… but what power did we actually wield when given the tools?
So, I was Lady’s nurse after they lost their child, Witch 2 was the Gentlewoman, and Witch 3 was his faithful messenger. Hecate was also Seward. We were all ever-present in the different parts of the set – observing and taking notes.
The over-arching story was incredibly effective, using the elements of absolute fear, distrust in the government, mental illness morphed from inept medical treatment. Extremely timely, hella dark. A reminder that human beings can do far worse things to each other than any unknown entity.
And a good time was had by all!

12/05/2024Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati is my Cincy artistic home and much of the reason is because of the Holiday show, which has employed me for nearly 25 years, and the Fairy Godmother Program. FG is an underwritten endeavor to ensure that the under-served children within our communities have the opportunity to see live theatre. While we used to have sponsors for this program, we now rely on the generosity of our audiences throughout the holiday season in helping us fundraise to keep the program going for the next year. This year, during Alice in Wonderland, we broke our fundraising record! Being a professional Regional Theatre Actor, ushering in the next generation of Theatre Artists, Technicians, Educators, Producers, and Lovers is the very best thing I can do with any talent I’ve honed.
